Webpage background Illustration

This illustration was created as background art for an earlier iteration of normanfournier.com. The photographic illustration was used as a reference for the illustration of the robot hand in the same position as the human hand.

Both images were then edited in Photoshop to match each other with regards to general color saturation and film grain.

Trade show exhibit working drawings

Working drawings for construction are created in a virtual world at a scale of 1 to 1. This allows for faster modelling and a smaller margin of error when converting to a less-accurate scale of, for example, 1/4"=1'.

Working drawings; Front Elevation, Plan, Right Side and Isometric are rendered illustrating colours and materials. Dimensions and other notes are added in Illustrator.

Once the models are created views are rendered. Efficiency and accuracy are built-in because only one actual "drawing" is used as a basis for all subsequent views, including perspectives, sections and animations. This allows for the exhibitor to have a greater sense of what the completed booth will look like than from traditional drawings or models.

Diagrams and prototype drawings

Argon Security Technologies manufactured a wireless surveillance product that had applications in Law Enforcement, Conservation and Military categories.

The wireless remote video technology was promoted in face-to-face presentations with key decision makers in an office or tradeshow environment. The product interfaces depended on where in the command echelon the user was situated, either in command or in the field.

The diagram above was used to illustrate how the product is deployed in a battlefield situation. Each component required a simple graphic to show how the discrete pieces integrated for an overall view of an evolving situation.

The command interface consisted of a matrix display of up to 16 camera views. Command would then analyze the data and and forward orders to the troops in the field.

This illustration diagrams HQ, LAV Drone, Helicopter, Satellite, Mobile Reconnaissance and Infantry as the combined forces converge on a target. The arrows show the flow of data to and from the field and to remote experts via the internet.

While the product design was being finalized prototypes were used to render models for placement in promotional brochures and other collateral. The photo at the bottom show an actor with helmet-mounted camera and hand-held unit 3-D illustrations composited into the photograph. The inset, below, is a photograph of the final, manufactured products for comparison.

Lions Gate Bridge, Vancouver

This series of illustrations were used in public consultations during the refurbishing of the Lions Gate Bridge in order to gauge the public's wishes for the outcome of the project; a new cable stay bridge in unfinished concrete, a new cable stay bridge in the iconic green, modification of the existing structure into a cable stay or a new suspension bridge.

The illustrations needed to show that the bump at the apex of the bridge would be eliminated now matter to course of action.

The drawings were produced in cooperation with the engineering firms tasked with overseeing the RFEI and RFP processes.

Piano recital handbill

This print and on-line promotional piece is for a piano recital of the 3 Bs, Bach Beethoven and Brahms. The headline type is based on the proportions of the black keys of a piano and appears in the illustration as three black keys that spell 3BS.

Alien Landscape

Nature does randomness much better than humans. No matter how much we humans try some order or pattern always introduces itself into our attempts at creating random-looking imagery, for example, landscapes or the arrangement of random beads in a photograph.

To create the ground plane of this image a black and white portrait of two faces was used to generate a mesh which was then distorted and textured to look like sand dunes.

Editorial Illustration

This hybrid uses both 3-D modelling and traditional digital illustration techniques to illustrate the article, "Northern Development. Raising the Bar." The finished piece was used on the cover of Aboriginal Times magazine.

A fretboard inlaid with the musician's name used for on-line promotions.
