Flattened totem pole graphic

10' x 20' pop-up exhibit with 3-D effect totem pole.

The actual totem pole featured in this exhibit, carved by Richard Krentz, sits in the reception area of the Employment Center in Vancouver and forms the symbol of the organization's principles and values.

The pole is symbolically interpreted as follows: The Vision of the Eagle is being able to see the big picture as well as the details; The Gift of the Goose is that everybody cheers everyone on, you can hear geese before they arrive and when a leader tires another takes over; The Spirit of the Squirrel is planning and frugality; The Way of the Beaver is everybody helping because all work has dignity and The Consensus of The People is the way of the First Nations.

How was this done?

The concept was first developed as a scale model. On approval, the pole was photographed from three sides, which entailed a total of six photographs, three of which were shot on scaffolding to prevent parallax from distorting the pole by introducing perspective into the photos. There was not enough room to use a lens that would capture the pole in one photograph.

The photos were assembled in Photoshop as shown in the graphic above.

In order for the illusion of the totem pole to be maintained, the ears at the top of the totem pole must be presented to the viewer in their correct orientation and dimensions. Note the orientation of the ears in the photo of the finished display, the totem pole reads properly from all sides. The illusion would be ruined if the eagle's ears were incorrectly oriented.

In reality it is effective trompe d'oeil, the only thing that is missing for verité would be to have the Eagle's beak projecting forward.

A second version of the exhibit was produced with a shorter pole for less flexible exhibit floor heights.
